WHO IS COMBONI?


Brief History


Comboni is an Italian born Saint who became the founded the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus formerly known as the Institute of the Good Shepherd for the Regeneration of Africa in 1867 and the Comboni Missionary Sisters formerly known as Pia Madre Nigrizia (Pious Mothers of Africa). Born on 15th March 1831 as Daniele Antonio Comboni in Limone Brescia, Italy, his parents, Luigi Comboni and Domenica Pace, were ordinary peasant farmers in Limone.

He studied at the Mazza Institute, a school which supported children whose parents could not afford education started by Don Mazza. He indicated an interest to become a priest and was ordained in 1854.
He had pledged and dedicated his life for the mission in Africa. He worked very hard against great odds to evangelize the central African region and founded the two Institutes which continue to evangelize Africa and the world. He was the first Bishop of Central Africa consecrated in 1877. He died in Khartoum on the 10th of October 1881 with these words in his mouth "I die but my work will not die, because it is the work of God".

Pope John Paul beatified him in 1996 and canonized on the 5th of October 2003. Comboni showed a great love for Africa to which he said "Africa or Death". He was determined to let Africa hear the gospel and become owners of the Gospel through his plan for the regeneration of Africa. He was devoted to his Slogan "Save Africa with Africa". He fought against the evil of slave trade of his time which was prevalent. He ransomed many slaves and educated them at the Mazza Institute. Fr. Daniel Sorur, an African born Sudanese slave became a priest after being ransomed by St. Daniel Comboni. This was the fulfilment of the plan of Comboni to "Save Africa with Africa."

Brief History


The Comboni Missionaries are missionary and religious congregations founded by St. Daniel Comboni. They include the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus and the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. It has also gone broadly to include the Comboni Secular Missionaries and the Comboni Lay Missionaries who play an active role in advancing the mission of Christ in the Spirit of Saint Daniel Comboni.

The Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus was founded in 1867 while the Comboni Missionary Sisters was founded in 1872. The Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus comprises of religious brothers and priests who minister in more than 40 across four continents of Africa, Europe, Asia and America.

The Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus work with the most disadvantaged people in areas which are abandoned and in the state of humandecadence. They lived as religious in Communities with strict vows of obedience, chastity and poverty.
